Caring for Your Micro Pig

We will make sure that you are well informed and comfortable with everything before you leave.

When you take one of our micro pigs home with you, we like to make sure that you know their basic needs.  We aim to put as much information into our website as possible and the ‘going home information pack’ that we will give you when you leave us, so that you know what to expect when you come to get your little oinker home.

It is very important to keep your piglet wormed regularly.  This can either be through vaccination, or a natural food supplement that is added to their food regularly.  We recommend Verm-X.  Take a look at their website http://verm-x.com/pigs.html

Micro pigs thrive in a loving, caring environment and love human contact and companionship.  They are intelligent animals who can be trained to your lifestyle, responding well to praise and treats, just as you would a dog.

Pigs also fair best in pairs, as they are very sociable animals, therefore, we will strongly advise that these pets be bought in pairs (we offer a discount for buying 2 piglets or more, please ask when enquiring).  They can become sad and withdrawn (depressed) if they do not have a constant companion.  Dogs are ideal if you have one, but they would need to live together for companionship to work.

If you have young children, adult supervision is advisable – if a child climbs all over and annoys your micro pig, or any other animal for that matter, they may become grumpy.

Taking Your Piglet Home

When collecting your micro pig, we will need to complete some paperwork with your CPH number before we can hand over any piglets (for reasons that has been explained in step 1), so please, don’t forget it!

You will need something to take your little pig home in.  We suggest a large sized cat basket if they are up to 10 weeks of age, or a dog cage if older than this.  They will need to have a locking front on it for safety and that will also fit in your vehicle along with your ‘Going Home Package’.

The Going Home Package:

An information Pack

A bale of straw (if required)

A bag of food

Birth Certificate

For extra long journeys (4 hours or more), you will need to bring some water and a bowl for the piglets to drink from at a convenient stop for you.

We will run through the information pack with you and answer all questions that you may have.  Whilst here, you will be able to meet our breeding stock.

When you get home, you may want to keep your piglet in a calm and quiet room inside your house for the first few days so that your piglet can get used to you, then gradually used to any other pets that you might have, including cats as well as dogs.  They will be comfortable on some blankets or a duvet for a few nights.   It is a good idea to handle them and pick them up as much as possible to create bonding and for the piglet to become use to this.

After this, if they are going to be living outside, move them to their own living accommodation as and when you think they are ready.  They won’t mind as they have been reared in the same type of environment and will be used to it.  They do not require any heaters, just as long as they have plenty of fresh barley straw in a draught-free but vented house, they will stay warm.  If after this you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to help.
