3 Steps to Ownership

WE HAVE SET UP 3 STEPS TO BECOMING A MICRO PIG OWNER:

Step 1 – Legal Requirements

 CPH number

Before you purchase your micro pig, it is a legal requirement that you register for your County Parish Holding (CPH) number. This is a free service, which will register your name and address (where the pig is to be kept).  It is a holding number that allows purchase and movement of your pig from us to you, and is the government’s way of keeping track and tracing animal movements around the country for health and disease reasons.

You can obtain your CPH number by calling the Rural Payments Agency on:

0845 603 7777

This is currently a free service.  Your paperwork will take around 2 weeks to reach you.  Without the CPH number you will not be able to take your micro pig home, as it is illegal.

Step 2 – Accommodation

 Housing

It is ideal for micro pigs to be housed in pig arks or sheds.  They love a bed of barley straw, which they love to chew on and make a cozy bed to sleep in.  Pigs do not soil their bedding area, therefore it stays cleaner for longer, but should be refreshed approximately every week.
Other accommodation is also suitable, such as a wooden wendy-house or shed.
Here is a useful website that gives a step-by-step guide on how to build your own pig arc: http://mangalitzapig.co.uk/build-a-pig-ark2.php

Penned area

It would be beneficial for your piggy to be kept in a safe penned area surrounding their accommodation when unattended.  We advise an area of around 15 square metres to be suitable.
Our own piggy pens consist of posts, stock fencing and a secure gate, of which we can advise you of a supplier for the materials: http://www.mcveighparker.com/  To stop mud becoming a problem during the winter/wet months, we keep our pigs to an area covered in 9-12 inches of wood-chips.  These woodchips can be purchased at a reasonable price from your local tree surgeon.
In summer time, due to pigs not being able to withstand excessive heat from direct sunlight, it is important that they have ample shade to reduce the risk of sunburn or heat stress.  This can be from the likes of a tree or a constructed sun-shade.  However, like you and I, they do enjoy some sun-bathing, if not too strong.
Regular cleaning of their toilet area promotes clean and healthy living for your micro pigs.  This manure can be composted and is a valuable fertiliser for your garden needs and an ideal additive without the use of any chemicals.

 Food & Water

As piglets, their water must be in a shallow dish (in case of drowning) - such as a heavy based pet bowl.  A clean and plentiful supply of drinking water everyday is imperative, especially in the summer months; you’ll be amazed at how much they drink.

Micro pigs do require a specific food.  It is not the regular pig food that farmers use to fatten their pigs and should be sought carefully.   We use non-fattening sow nuts that have the correct balance of vitamins, minerals and protiens.  You can get these from your local agricultural merchant for around £7.00-£7.50 for a 25kg bag and will last several weeks.  Use this link to find out where your local supplier is …   http://www.marriagefeeds.co.uk/sales_enquiries.shtml.  Enter your name, postcode and how many pigs you have and it will give you your nearby stockists.   Just a small handful of these once a day for your newly acquired piglet, growing in size to half a dog bowl when fully grown.
